Planes for U.S. Army Air Corps surge toward 50 000 strength
Washington reports say U.S. production of military airplanes could be restricted to 120 a month before a ban. The Air Corps plans three parallel lines of growth: more planes, more airfields, and pilot training. Goals evolve from 500 planes and 7000 pilots by 1941 to 25,000 planes and 12,000 pilots, with a 30 000 pilot per year target. The fifth defense bill funds 30 additional battalions and a yearlong program to train 30 010 pilots annually to sustain a 50 000 plane force. Fifty new military airports are active this year, bringing bases to about 200. A new Air Corps statistical division tracks projects as land must be acquired quietly to keep prices down. On March 22 the first class of 2000 cadets began 30 weeks of training to become 10% pilots per intake, with many graduates entering the Air Corps Reserve as second lieutenants.

The Mellowing Age and the Rise of Detective Fiction
The piece discusses Rebecca and library sales, noting Stern’s view that murder remains a serious business in fiction. He argues crime stories should evolve from automaton plots toward lifelike, atmosphere rich drama with learning, actors, and maturity in the genre.
