Eugene McCarthy's bipartisan challenge in 1968 primary
Senator Eugene J McCarthy of Minnesota surprised parties with early primary strength over Vietnam policy. Born March 29 1916 he built a career as a teacher and professor before entering Congress, and by 1966 publicly opposed bombing in Vietnam. His 1968 bid positions him as a challenger to the incumbent president within the Democratic ranks.
