Court Order Defied by Phone Group
The AFLCIO and CWA defied back to work court orders in Alabama and Kentucky as the nationwide telephone strike entered its fifth day. Beirne blasted the injunctions as anti union and linked them to AT and T efforts to prolong the walkout. Despite the court actions, AT T said service was mostly maintained with workers filling in and customers hearing male voices over operators. The union and company clash intensified with reports of cables cut and booths damaged as 23,000 Western Electric installers joined the strike along with other Bell System staff across about 40 states. No talks are planned, and the union executive board met without progress toward a settlement.
