Council assures consumers on food prices after decontrol
Washington AP The Cost of Living Council seeks to reassure shoppers that retail and wholesale food decontrol will not trigger sharp overall price rises this year. The program ends April 30, with some stores likely raising prices but no broad inflation expected. Government officials note farm price declines do not promise retail savings, and profits for food retailers are only recovering after declines from 1969 to 1972. Only a few major industries remain under controls as decontrol progresses.
