Black September: Beirut links complicate Palestinian extremism

Fewer than 300 Black September members are believed active, with ties to Fatah. Analysts note unclear command structures, funding, and possible headquarters in Beirut Lebanon. The group has carried high profile attacks from Munich to Bangkok, with a history of hijackings and assassinations.

Tan Chau Devastated Ghost Town After Shelling

Tan Chau in the Mekong Delta sits nearly empty as steel shutters padlock shops. About four-fifths of its 30,000 residents have fled after weeks of shelling by North Vietnamese and Viet Cong batteries near the Cambodian border. More than 80 killed and 260 wounded. Remaining residents cling to edges of town, some workers in dying silk and fishing. An international team has investigated shellings but cannot stop them. U.S. sources say the shelling is meant to harass troops before an occupation bid, while a South Vietnamese soldier calls it a pilot project to scare residents.
