Final Pro Playoff to Be Rough
SAN FRANCISCO AP Gun ning for the Western playoff championship of the NBA and the basket of cash going with it, the St. Louis Hawks battle the San Francisco Warriors tonight at the Cow Palace in the decider of their seven game series. Waiting in the wings to see who'll break the 3-3 tie are the Boston Celtics, the defending NBA champs who won the East jern playoffs from the Cincinnati Royals a week ago. The Celtices reportedly are in censed over the long wait. "Nonsense," says General Manager Bob Federick of the Warriors. The rest gives them the advantage over either of us who must play tonight and then be in Boston to open the finals on Saturday night. And the Celt ics 'know it." Originally the final Western game was scheduled Tuesday but the San Francisco Seals had the Cow Palace reserved that night for a Western Hockey As sociation playoff game against Los Angeles. As the Hawks and Warriors go into their deciding game be fore an anticipated crowd of 10,000, Wilt Chamberlain must be the big man no matter how you look at his 7-foot-1-inch eight. For if the Hawks can check his shooting, they'll probably win since the other Warriors haven't been consistent with outside shooting. In setting de fenses, the visitors will have two or even three harrassing Wilt. At stake in the cash depart ment tonight is a purse of $12,500 for the winning team against $10,000 for the loser. That difference isn't so great but the winner goes into the fi nal playoff where the purses will be $25,000 and $17,000. The closer tonight goes home. Through six playoff games, Chamberlain leads the scoring with 235 points and has grabbed 143 rebounds.
