Cotton futures rise on rains and hedging amid May liquidations

Prices moved higher after rains in the cotton belt influenced new crop plantings. May futures at 34.59, Oct at 29.47, with late afternoon gains of 45 cents to 1 dollar per bale from the prior close. Several contracts showed substantial intraday swings and hedging activity, while middling spot rose to 35.48.
