Requirements For Good Corn Yield

Two key needs for high corn yield are water and nitrogen. Plowing under a legume or soybeans increases soil organic matter, boosts water-holding capacity, and adds nitrogen. With favorable rain and nitrogen fertilizer, yields rise, with estimates of 10 extra bushels per acre and about 20 extra bushels when soybeans or cowpeas are incorporated.

Prevention of Sore Shoulders Is Urged

Extension agent M. W. Muldrow of the University of Arkansas College of Agriculture urges proper collar fit and harness adjustment to prevent sore shoulders in work animals. He recommends a heavy leather collar with only minimal space for the fist width between collar and windpipe and for the fingers above the shoulder. Regular cleaning after work, warm water wash, salt rinse, daily brushing, and shoulder conditioning during spring filleting help harden muscles and shed winter hair.
