Air secretary taps Lindbergh for new Air Force academy panel

Harold Talbott named Charles Lindbergh and two civilians Virgil Hatherton and Merrill Meigs to a five member commission to propose a site for a new Air Force academy. Military members Gen Carl Spaatz and Lt Gen Hubert Harmon already announced. Lindbergh, a longtime adviser, was confirmed as brigadier general in the Air Reserve. Law dictates site selection by Talbott with no congressional approval. Fort Custer cited as best site by Talbott though he left open possibility of a better location. Temporary site funded up to 1 million dollars, operations begin June 1955 with permanent structure expected by 1957. Congress asked to nominate cadets for first class.
