Floods from the storm that moved from the Mississippi Gulf into the Southeast killed at least 32 people across Alabama Kentucky West Virginia and Virginia. Alabama reported 23 deaths many from tornadoes while Kentucky two West Virginia two and Virginia two. Thousands were driven from homes as sandbag levees formed and floodwaters rose in Barbourville Pineville Sneedville and Smithfield Estates. National Guard units aided evacuations and floods worsened with a burst dam near Kingsport.
A small number of legislators are expected at the Capitol in Little Rock to formally recess the regular session until August 1978 after a 68 day term. The plan relies on calls by House Speaker Jim Shaver and Sen. W. K. Ingram Jr. with a skeleton crew if no recall.
Supervisory and salaried personnel at Adolph Coors Co. continued beer production despite a strike by about 1,500 brewery workers. Local 366 of the Brewery Union walked out Tuesday night over contract language the company says it imposed unilaterally in early February.
The Hempstead County Quorum Court approved an eight to one vote to require constables to attend the Law Enforcement Academy or obtain equivalent training before county payment. at the following meeting, Justices revoked the rule citing overreach since they do not hire the constables. Salaries were set at 50 dollars monthly with 25 dollars for car expenses as discussions covered a police radio request, radar unit notes, and potential Title 4 funds.
In southern Lebanon near the Israeli border Christian militiamen and Palestinian guerrillas fought for strategic hills for a third day. The clash centered on Taibe and Rub Tallateen with claims of multiple Christian tanks burned and heavy casualties on the Christian side according to Palestinian and Moslem spokesmen.

Southwestern Bell announced the opening of a PhoneCenter Store at 320 S. Main in Hope. The store operates 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and offers a one stop shop for telephone business plus customer installation of modular connections and phones to save installation charges. A manager noted discounts for homes with four pronged jacks and modular connections, with installation charges applying only when a technician visit is needed for non repair work. About 23 percent of area residences already have modular connections.
Arkansas Municipal Power Association plans a two to three month postponement of AP&L's $5.4 million wholesale electric rate increase set for May 2. James H. Brewer, chairman, said the FPC will be asked to delay the effective date to study the request. The association includes municipally owned utilities in North Little Rock Conway Benton Hope Osceola Prescott West Memphis and co operatives at Newport and Blytheville.
