Private clubs push liquor access in Arkansas appeal

The owners of 90 private clubs challenge a court order closing their venues in dry counties seeking to stay open during their appeal. They cite revenue losses and debt of 10 000 to 300 000 while opponents decry the clubs as fueling lawlessness and corruption. Plane crash near New Hope leaves many dead in Georgia

A Southern Airways DC9 crashed in a lightning hail storm near New Hope Georgia killing at least 68 people. Flight 242 from Huntsville to Atlanta exploded after hitting trees and a grocery store, with two dozen injured admitted to area hospitals.

Optimism for Red River funds in Congress bid

Spokesman for the Red River Commission said chances are good Congress will fund most of the basin development. John F. Stroud Jr asked a Senate subcommittee to delete the Posten Bayou project’s 180000 and divert it to planning for Days Creek Nix Creek and McKinney Bayou in the Texarkana area. Gen. James M. Rose joined in urging these drainage and flood control projects despite Carter budget cuts.

Carter proposes changes in food stamp program

President Carter asks Congress to keep current benefits for most recipients while stopping them from paying part of the aid. The plan would disqualify about 600,000 families, cut or cap benefits for 1.58 million, and raise 880,000 more households into the program, with opposition from Senate leaders and White House budget staff amid a broad water projects lobby advancing in Congress.

High court allows clubs to operate during appeal

The Arkansas Supreme Court ruled that 9 clubs in 4 dry counties may continue liquor operations while appealing a lower court order撤 withdrawing their permits. The court set deadlines for written briefs and replies, with clubs seeking to avoid revenue loss during the appeal.

Attorney General Rules On Dry County Liquor Use At Clubs

The attorney general said a club member in a dry county may bring his own liquor to the club and mix a drink but cannot sell liquor. A one gallon possession limit applies. Pools and replenishment by member charges could be legal depending on setup but may violate law in some forms. The ruling follows a circuit court decision that earlier invalidated club permits.
