The National Weather Service reports a large high pressure system bringing fair skies to Arkansas. Temperatures drop from the 30s in the north to the 40s in the south as the air turns cooler.
The latest forecast notes a cold north wind crossing the state, with gradual warming to the 50s in the north and mid 60s in the south. Winds ease as high pressure builds, but temperatures will fall again to the 30s tonight.
Arkansas State Claims Commission awarded Kenneth M. Odom 43,250 for a 1970 shooting at Cummins Prison Farm bleachers. The injury by a trusted guard was deemed accidental, amid a request for 200,000. payment pending legislative appropriation.

Tonight at 8 p.m. the Kiwanis Club presents its 31st annual show at Hope City Hall auditorium. Gary Wells leads the Hope High School Wind Ensemble and the Interlocutor Larry Patterson guides a lineup including Litnin Mishap Balls Short Stuf Bullet and Leroy. Nine acts range from sublime to ridiculous with Norma Jean Delaney Edna Lavonne the Misfits and a Square Dance group new this year. Accompanist Lynn Bauman is joined by Winfred Huckabee Charles Webb Harold Eakley Tom Buchelter and Andy Caldwell for a jazz set. Tickets are still $1.00, the same as 30 years ago.
Federal Energy Office shifts fuel to 36 states boosting April supplies by about 4 percent while halting growth in 12 states and DC. Vermont and Texas see notable cuts, with Idaho and New Hampshire nearly unchanged. Increases range from 10 to 29 percent for 13 states. others rise 1 to 9 percent.
Attorney Vincent Hallinan says he fears Patricia Hearst may be dead and the latest SLA tape could be a ruse. FBI continues two month hunt for the kidnap hideout while William Randolph Hearst Foundation funds aid for the poor if she is released unharmed. The tape offers no date and declares Hearst joined the SLA.
Christopher Lewis, Loretta Young’s son and a film producer, pleaded no contest to a child molestation charge. A superior court judge ordered psychiatric examination before a May 9 hearing to determine sex offender classification. He is among 14 men indicted by a county grand jury on films involving boys aged 6 to 17.
