A pair of fires ripped Bren nans Restaurant in the French Quarter Thursday night. About 100 firefighters battled a second four alarm blaze that tore through the roof of the three story stucco and wood frame building after the first blaze started in air ducts above a dining room. The restaurant had closed after the initial fire, and patrons were guided to safety with no panic reported.
A 567 foot oil tanker Spartan Lady reported breaking up about 150 miles south of New York in bad weather. Coast Guard planes and cutters moved to help while a Russian vessel was about 60 miles away. The Siberian registry tanker carried No 6 fuel oil and has a crew of 36. Coast Guard said the distress call was received in New York.
