Allegan County rescinds K-6 mask mandate

The Allegan County Health Department rescinds its K-6 mask order effective 5 p.m. Sept. 30 due to funding risk. Local districts may set their own mandates. Saugatuck Public Schools had required masks, while Hamilton and Fennville moved to optional. Ottawa County’s pre K-6 mandate stays in effect. The governor’s 2022 budget provision threatens funding for lingering orders. legal counsel called it presumptively constitutional. Health Officer Angelique Joynes called the decision difficult and ethically challenging.

Booster COVID-19 vaccines available at sites in area

The FDA has approved third boosters for Pfizer for older adults and high risk groups, with eligibility including frontline workers, seniors, long term care residents, and 18 to 64 with conditions. Vandalism charges dropped over Confederate statue dispute

Allendale Township officials decided not to pursue charges related to damage to a Civil War memorial statue in Garden of Honor. Township Supervisor Adam Elenhaas cited a goal to avoid divisiveness and avoid adding to a contentious national debate sparked by 2020 protests. Earlier this year charges were issued against individuals for local ordinance violations connected to the statue.
