A tall fringed Hamilton tulip with bright yellow flowers and feathered edges. It blooms mid to late spring and draws bees to gardens and planters.
To celebrate Tulip Time's 90th year, about 30 percent of the tulips planted this year are orange, making up 21 of the 122 varieties planted around Holland.
The costume hails from Gelderland, the Netherlands' largest province. It features a rich black brocade vest over a blue striped shirt and a red scarf as striking accents.
In 1931 Tulip Time featured a street scrubbing gimmick proposed by Warm Friend Tavern's manager who advised sprinkling Old Dutch Cleanser on downtown Holland. Holland High School girls and a dozen business men scrubbed the wet streets, drawing national film attention and starting a lasting tradition.
Holland Michigan hosts TulipTime Festival as PureMichigan and local groups praise the beauty. DeniseGorski and HollandMuseum offer warm greetings as TulipTime marks decades of reflections of creativity in the Holland community.
The 90th Dutch Marktplaats runs through May 11 at the Holland Civic Center from 10 am to 5 pm with live Dutch entertainment and vendor stalls. Becca Panko of Pam's Pantry notes the event lets vendors share goods with the Holland community and visitors. A Dutch buffet is offered 11 am to 2 pm for 14, featuring traditional fare and desserts.
