Minor league baseball players face loss of minimum wage protection
A provision in a massive spending bill would strip minor league players earning as little as 5500 a season of federal minimum wage protections. The Save America’s Pastime Act appears in the bill, pre empting a California class action suit against MLB and teams. Lawmakers’ rush drew criticism from players lawyer Garrett Broshuus, who called the move emblematic of secrecy in Washington. MLB lobbied heavily, spending over 1.3 million across 2016 2017 to secure the exemption, while minor league salaries remain far below major league levels and per diem and signing bonus figures are cited.
