Michigan House limits asset forfeiture in drug cases
The Michigan House approved bills to restrict civil asset forfeiture in drug cases, requiring returned cash and property unless convicted or worth over 50 000 dollars. The measure, backed 1073 to votes, moves to resolve differences with the Senate before Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signs. Critics call forfeiture abuse policing for profit. Named sponsors include Rep. Jason Wentworth and Speaker Lee Chatfield. A 2017 report noted 736 cases where property was forfeited without charges.
