Zeeland man among five killed in Grattan Raceway crash
A single engine Cessna 182 Skylane carrying members of the Western Michigan Parachute Club crashed on takeoff from Grattan Raceway near Grand Rapids. Pilot Clarence Scofield and four passengers died. five others survived. The plane burned after impact and the group had just completed two jumps prior to attempting a third. Alan Koeman, 28, of Zeeland, was among the victims. Funeral plans were announced by Vriesland Reformed Church.

Former President Gerald Ford caused a head wound when his drive struck Gene Bartelt 75 yards down the fairway at the Vince Lombardi Memorial Golf Tournament in Menomonee Falls Wisconsin. Bartelt spent the night in hospital and Ford apologized warmly. About 25 000 attendees helped raise funds for the Lombardi Colon Clinic with several notable figures present.

Holland city will distribute summer tax bills by Friday July 1 using a computer printed self mailer system. Each bill is mailed separately by zip code reducing mailing workload though total levy rises to 7 733 539 18 dollars with a rate of 50 574 dollars. Deferment options exist for seniors under 10 000 income. penalties set at 2 percent after August 15 and 6 percent after September 10.
