Tulip Time festival in Holland wraps up strong 90th edition

The Tulip Time festival in Holland enjoyed a largely sunny week with record turnout and new additions. Executive Director Gwen Auwerda said five million tulips bloom annually in Holland and attendance likely surpassed 500,000 across May 4 to 12. The event drew visitors from 15 to 20 foreign countries, reported 1,850 hotel rooms booked, and saw a 10 percent lift in motorcoach tours. The 5K and 10K races attracted about 4,200 runners, with a new Paint the Town Orange theme.

Peregrine falcon chicks at the Consumers Energy JH Campbell Complex in West Olive were tagged with IDs. A female and two males, about 25 days old, were identified in a joint effort by Consumers Energy and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. Kaless notes typical hatchings are threes and a chick’s first year life may span 15 to 20 years with half not surviving due to competition for food, flight, and avoiding human activity and predators.
