Under Michigan Read by Grade Three, 16 of 17 Holland Public Schools third graders slated for retention earned exemptions to advance to fourth grade while West Ottawa granted exemptions to all 18 students who scored below target, leaving one Holland student retained.
Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed a historic 17.1 billion school aid fund budget, narrowing the K-12 per-pupil funding gap to 8,700 dollars as districts prepare for the 2021 22 fiscal year. The measure ends the state portion gap but equity remains incomplete with wealthier districts still relying on local taxes.
Voters in Saugatuck Township and the Saugatuck-Douglas library district face renewing local taxes on August 3. The township millage funds cemetery maintenance with about $75,000 yearly, plus $13,000 from intermunicipal plot sales, while the library seeks a 0.25 mill renewal and a slight increase to cover about one third of its budget.</S>
