Grass fires along U S 31 spark from semi truck
Holland Department of Public Safety tackled a series of roadside grass fires along U S 31 around 4 p.m. on Monday July 9. Fire Marshal Bret Greendyke noted the blazes were not from a cigarette but likely sparked by something from or near a semi truck. Three fire engines responded. The largest burn area measured about 100 by 20 feet near the Menards intersection with 16th Street, with additional 10 by 10 foot blazes. Bystanders alerted 911 authorities. Lt. Andy Stokes estimated the total damage across the largest patch and smaller fires.
