West Michigan lawmakers Rep Bill Huizenga Rep Fred Upton and Rep Peter Meijer condemned the U S Capitol riot that halted Congress counting of electoral votes. They criticized rioters and urged condemning violence with U S democracy at stake. Upton and Meijer faulted Trump for incitement.
President Donald Trump for the first time acknowledged defeat in the Nov. 3 vote and said there will be an orderly transition on January 20. The change follows chaotic Capitol events as supporters stormed the building, forcing Congress to halt the Electoral College tally for hours and causing multiple deaths. Trump urged a transition while defending his actions amid widespread denials of the election outcome by officials.
Legal experts say the Capitol riot, occurring during the election certification debate, could be charged as sedition. The scene turned chaotic as rioters breached barricades and forced lawmakers to flee, following a pro Trump rally. U S attorney Matthew Schneider contrasts peaceful protest with this act and calls the conduct inexcusable.
Michigan officials say frontline workers and residents will be eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine starting Monday January 11 but rural health departments report they cannot meet that date. Several counties with small populations say doses are not yet available, with some expecting shipments not before January 24. Local departments rely on Moderna as Pfizer requires deep freeze storage, and plans are in progress to store Pfizer where possible while using Moderna in storage-limited areas. See VACCINE, A2.
