Ottawa County's unemployment rose 0.1 percentage point from 3.1 percent in October to 3.2 percent in November, still below Michigan's 6.3 percent statewide rate and tied with Clinton County for the lowest county rate. Allegan and Kent counties posted higher figures while payrolls varied across sectors, with retail gains and leisure declines noted. More than 17,000 Michigan residents filed unemployment claims for the week ending Dec. 19, down from the prior week.
Marlena’s Bistro and Pizzeria at 909 Lincoln Ave in Holland has been issued a cease and desist by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development for remaining open for dine-in service despite health orders. Owner Marlena Pavlos says the restaurant operates to follow constitutional rights and does not enforce COVID-19 protocols.

West Ottawa High School senior Tieren Mann known as TJ completed the Boy Scouts climb to Eagle Scout with a Dec 20 Court of Honor held partly via Zoom due to COVID-19. Mann led an Eagle Project building raised garden beds at Parkview Adult Foster Care Home in Zeeland, aiding residents and house parents.
