One-room Elm River School Faces Declining Rural Enrollment
In remote northern Michigan, Elm River Township School, built in 1906, serves six students across nine grades in a single room. The district relies on property taxes, not state funds, and faces ongoing closure risk as rural populations age and move away. Teachers emphasize close student relationships and unique flexibility, enabling trips to Michigan Tech and local resorts.
