Holland council weighs inclusiveness after racism experiences
Councilman Vincy Byrd, Holland’s first Black member, voted against a memo seeking a plan by the Human Relations Commission to broaden input, educate the public and set task timelines toward making Holland an inclusive city. Byrd shared a past incident with a white wife in which he faced racist abuse and Nazi salutes, urging focus on relationships over written actions. The memo passed 8-1, outlining engagement and study-session review to expand community dialogue on inclusivity.
