Mosquito borne diseases prompt MDHHS warning in Michigan
The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services urges protection after suspected and confirmed cases of California encephalitis in Genesee County and EEE in Kalamazoo and Berrien counties. Six horses have died from the disease across Barry, Kalamazoo and St. Joseph counties, with two diagnosed in Barry and Cass counties. No human vaccine exists for EEE or California encephalitis. Death rates reach 33 percent for humans and 90 percent for horses. Prevention focuses on avoiding bites via DEET repellents, long sleeves and pants, screens, removing standing water, and outdoor nets or fans. The risk remains high until late fall.
