Efficiency of horses on farms lowers costs in crops
W J Spillman of the US Department of Agriculture notes that work horses on American farms average about 3.5 hours daily, using power under half capacity. With annual costs around 125 dollars and 1250 hours yearly, hourly cost is ten cents. Doubling hours worked could cut hourly cost to five cents without harming the animals, boosting overall efficiency.
