Hobbs Oilers decisively outclassed Roswell as spectators filled the Hobbs ground for a double header. The hosts won 12-3 in the first game and 12-2 in the second, with Roswell's offense stifled by Hobbs pitching and defense. A lively crowd enjoyed the double feature and even wagering chatter accompanied the spirited day of baseball.
An Las Vegas Optic editorial links Lea County's strong Democratic majorities to political neglect, argues voters trade favors after promises, and predicts highway and relief funds will influence the next election. It cites Highway 66 completion, a grant of relief funds, and federal aid as work incentives for campaign outcomes.
Tex Riley has leased the north corner room in Worth Hotel and will occupy it as the Hobbs Dispensary after receiving a dispenser's license. The highway department office will relocate one door south to the former Riley Cleve law office space.
Mr. and Mrs. Bill Clark traveled to Dallas Saturday morning for a several day visit, planning to remain there for an extended stay.
Oil operators from Hobbs Eunice and Jar fields met in Artesia with the Southeastern New Mexico allocation committee to back No 83 paving from Hobbs to Artesia. They insisted No 18 between Hobbs and Jal be paved, arguing it carries the heaviest tonnage and has been neglected, and pledged endorsement if No 83 sponsors back 18. The petition was prepared for signatures in Hobbs and Lea County.
John Bingham acting democratic state chairman sent a form letter to Lea County Democrats urging harmony and proper registration. The law requires county commissioners meeting on the first Monday in June to notify party chairs to supply by twenty five days four qualified electors per precinct to serve on the registration board for approval by the commissioners.
Will Robinson of the State Board of Liquor Control was present on Tuesday to discuss regulatory matters. He met with officials to review licensing procedures and enforcement policies.
C. E. Lawrence, local chairman, reports the second ERA project is active with six men employed for three months. Oscar Dunsworth leads the crew cleaning an alley, rotating work among eligible workers and expanding from the city center toward the main thoroughfare. Government funds cover working hours, and a prior ERA effort at the athletic field shows dramatic improvements in vacant property and sanitation across Hobbs.
D H Coleman and W R Griffith will start a bus line July 1 from Hobbs Texas to Monahans via Tatum Lovington and Wink. Buses depart 7 a m from Hobbs, reach Monahans at 5 p m with train and Greyhound connections. A mail contract exists Lovington to Tatum. Commission granted the permit after a June 18 hearing.
Will Jackson and Sam G Horne traveled to Lubbock to finalize negotiations for purchasing Alexander’s interest in the Jackson Alexander & Horne Grocery Company. The firm becomes Jackson Horne Grocery Co as Alexander exits his two Texas stores to focus on his other ventures. Jackson sells his interest in the two stores operated by Alexander.
Hobbs Argonne Post No 26 American Legion sponsors a three day barbecue and rodeo on July 2 3 4 with Buster Lee directing the rodeo program. Centered at the Pla Mar dance pavilion the concessions and many feature events will be held. Includes dances music from jazz to fiddle with old time square dances. Legion promises a broad program with minor events and prizes, more details to come.
Hobbs Town trustees devoted nearly the entire regular session to liquor licensing under the amended Lane Liquor Law. The adopted ordinance sets license fees: beer only 150, beer and wine 175, all liquors 400. Special licenses for meals range from 150 to 1,000. Wholesale beer 150, beer and wine 200, all liquors 400. Distillers unspecified. Schedule takes effect July 1.
John H. Hall of Albuquerque applies to the State Corporation Commission for permission to run a passenger and express motor service between Hobbs and Carlsbad. A hearing will be held soon. Eddy County News urges approval for a daily mail route, noting the current long detour and potential four hour delivery with improved road links and a bus line.
Superintendent W D Staf ford and Geo T Harris returned from Artesia with Attorney John R Brand to confer with Governor Hockenhull on the Hobbs Municipal School District bonds. The governor endorsed the objective as the gate to the state and promised to push the arrangement upon arrival in Santa Fe.
The grand jury adjourned Friday afternoon and can reconvene at any time. Sixty witnesses were examined. six no bills were returned and several indictments were not officially reported, except as to O. G. Hardman in an arsenic poisoning case and H. L. Todd for a statutory offense, already published.
State Relief headquarters released figures showing 5200 drouth stricken farmers on work projects. The state has received 350000 dollars to date for drouth relief, with 100000 received May 1, 100000 on June 7, and 150000 on June 11, per Miss Margaret Reeves, director of the Federal Replies administration in New England.
William Farnsworth, known as Uncle Billie, was found dead after a party at his Jal home on the outskirts. A housekeeper and cook is jailed, two men suspected of participation are sought, and Farnsworth’s body shows shotgun injuries. Farnsworth, 70s, long a Jal resident and noted for charity, left a sister in Arkansas as a surviving relative.
A full house attended the Athletic Shows at American Legion hall on Saturday night under Coleman Curlee. Fortz and Wood wrestled to a three round draw, with two wrestling matches also staged. In the main bout Rogers defeated Anderson two falls to one. The crowd showed strong enthusiasm and the hall offered comfortable, well arranged seating and a good ring. Further shows are planned at regular intervals due to strong patronage.
Several New Mexico criminal cases were disposed in district court with varied outcomes. Bain bonds forfeited after nonappearance. Small found not guilty of arson in a 15 minute jury verdict. Hardman case continued. Todd case resulted in mental incompetence ruling and not guilty verdict. Merony case delayed to June 29. Dillsworth trial set for June 28. Cathey pled guilty to carrying a concealed weapon with a four month jail term starting July 1.
McKinley Chevrolet manager B M Stodghill and Baisten went to El Paso on Friday to fetch an Oldsmobile sedan for a customer and will return today.
Ten liquor licenses were ordered issued for the municipality of Hobbs at a special meeting of the Town trustees Wednesday night. Dispenser licenses were granted to Palace Drug Store Tex Riley Roy Yarbrough Peyton and Carter J L Fields. Special licenses for beer and wine were issued for cafes re N Whistle Cafe Mecca Cafe and J L Fields. A wholesale license for wine and beer went to Elson and Co. License fees are payable one year in advance.
The Griffith Theaters project advances rapidly as many workers rush to complete walls and roof. Manager O B Wood Jr states interior work will proceed day and night to meet the scheduled opening date of July 16th.
