Mrs Ollie Martin wife of a local oil field worker testifies that the Tokio Night Club bartender M B Payday Shorty Austin assaulted her in an apartment behind the club about 3 am Thursday. Austin pleads not guilty and is held on $2000 bond. Preliminary hearing set for June 20.
New Mexico livestock and range report as of June 1 shows marked improvement in range feed prospects after May rainfall and snows. Range condition up 22 points from May 1 to June 1 with moisture adequate except far southwest. calf losses high, lamb crop large, and wool prices improving amid slow sales.
Mrs. A. C. Chesher came home from Lubbock on Monday and is recovering well from a short illness.
The editor notes W. J. Rockefeller will be 96 next month and may live beyond 100 due to wealth access to medical care, careful living, regular exercise, and a water regimen. His forebears’ longevity is cited and a humorous remark on heredity appears.

The tentative school budget shows the maintenance fund rise from 5,436,878 to 5,837,907 and direct charge from 494,917 to 756,587. Teachers salaries increase by 418,232 from 3,634,687 to 4,032,879, with transportation reallocation boosting direct charges. janitors wages rise from 188,996 to 209,136.
Construction of four new and modern houses nears completion on the Pat Ruckman property. Each house is expected to cost about $1200 upon completion.

Mr and Mrs Bill Windland of Texas are visiting in Hobbs this week for a brief stay and local engagements.
Driscoll Irvin a former deputy sheriff was given six months in jail and two years suspended in a federal case at Lubbock. He and his father Len Irvin and 17 others faced charges of conspiring to defraud the U S government of liquor taxes. Len Irvin received two years in prison with two years suspended. Other participants drew sentences from no jail time to three years suspended.
The Black Panther Patrol of New Hobbs Boy Scout Troop will conduct an all night hike tonight. Scouts meet at New Hobbs school this afternoon at 3 o'clock for the event.
Edward A. Oakley of Santa Fe was named director of Public Works for New Mexico yesterday. He succeeds Geo M. Neal, the state Public Works engineer, who has been serving as acting director.
Hot Springs reports Governor Clyd Tingley will attend a two day meeting of state publishers on June 21 and 22. R. H. Coleman publisher was informed that the governor and his party plan to arrive Friday afternoon to witness the regatta and review the boat parade.

Rev and Mrs Homer Gilbert and daughter Christine spend the weekend in Portales to attend the District Assembly of The Church of the Nazarene.
The Roswell Chamber of Commerce sponsors a Goodwill tour arriving in Hobbs Tuesday afternoon with the Roswell Chamber band and a band program planned. The itinerary includes Tatum and Lovington as part of the motorcade.
Hobbs trustees debate a plan to transfer Lea Mex Gas and Water properties to a municipal system subject to voter approval. Lea Mex offers 135000 revenue bonds and a self liquidating arrangement funded by plant revenues. The proposal, outlined by H S Raymond, would avoid Town taxes while transferring water and gas assets in Hobbs New Hobbs.
Floyd Huckabee, a Hobbs youth, was sentenced by District Judge James B McGhee on Tuesday to the state reform school after conviction for numerous petty thefts. Two younger Huckabee children were placed under the care of Welfare Association.
The attorney general's office issues 191st opinion on state sales tax holding municipal light plants are exempt just as municipal water plants, after a court decision and new law exempting all water municipal plants.
Local young men are urged to leave names and addresses at Hobbs post office. A party of recruiting officers will be here on the morning of July 9.
