Russian Army Resting In Manchuria After Summer Campaign

September dispatches report the Russian forces reconcentrating in the north for recuperation after months of fighting. Elsewhere Chinese forces, numbering about three hundred thousand, engage Japanese entrenchments near Port Arthur and Dalny as heavy rains pause operations. In Utah, a new political party forms to oppose church influence in politics, while Maine records a Republican plurality of 27,130.

In Vladivostok on Sept 14 the Russian prize court freed the steamer Calchas but confiscated its cargo of flour cotton and timber destined for Japan. In Gibraltar on Sept 14 officers from a Russian cruiser boarded the British steamer Derven.

A St Petersburg report says Japanese reinforcements via Newhwang are strengthening Kuropatkin’s right. Linovitch’s 50,000 men invaded northeast Korea to cut Kuroki’s links to Feng Wang Cheng as Russians, Chinese and Japanese loot Liaoyang. Bands rob a Rock Island express for 10,000 yen and a Canton official is removed for issuing tainted certificates.

Russian Commander Pins Liaoyang Loss on General Orloff

In official dispatch from St Petersburg Kuropatkin blames General Orloff for failure to defend key points at Liaoyang. Russian casualties are estimated at 5 000 killed and 12 000 wounded. In Mukden the Japanese are within 21 miles, panic subsides, and business resumes as 40 000 Japanese losses and 12 000 wounded are noted for the Liaoyang fighting.

Russian Lena Leaves San Francisco After Repairs

Reports from San Francisco indicate the Russian auxiliary cruiser Lena was inspected for repairs and boilers found in need of overhaul. Authorities ordered the Lena to depart within government time or dismantle and remain until the war ends. A later note states dismantling was permitted. Colorado Governor Renominated by Republicans

The Republicans renominated James I. Peabody for Colorado governor. Peabody called out the state militia during June labor troubles, drew sharp charges of serving corporate interests and the wealthy to suppress strikers, and was accused of steering the state toward civil war, with minimal loss of life thanks to his intervention.
