Forest fires on Hawaii subdued after two weeks of effort
Forester R A Hosmer reports that persistent intermittent showers over four days quelled fires threatening leeward Hawaii. A 2000 acre area, mainly ohia and ferns, burned on government land near Kaapana and on Honaunau lands leased to Damon and Bruner. Hosmer outlined a plan using two 40 foot-wide firebreaks and back fires, noting koa timber remained intact. Governor Carter and Forestry Bureau will hear requests on a proposed Hilo forest reserve. A public warning placard was posted island wide to deter dry-season fires.
