Twenty Thousand Dollars Of Postal Funds Disappear

Honolulu reports a major shortage at the Koloa post office uncovered by a crude method. Twenty seven thousand dollars vanish, postmaster Rego and assistant Spaulding claim ignorance. Manuel A. Rego of Kolon Kauai, a merchant, livery operator, and cane planter, is tied to the post office as owner and manager. John P. Spaulding, the assistant postmaster, acts as bookkeeper and handled office work.

Leper Sanatorium Bills Endorsed by House Committee

The House Committee on Interstate and Foreign Commerce approved bills to establish mainland leper sanitariums and to appropriate 150000 for Hawaii to fund scientific study of the disease Delegate Kuhio urged favorable action during the hearing in Washington D C on February 3.

Japanese workers accused of poisoning Makaweli manager

Two Japanese employees named Nomi Mizo and Yonimoto were arrested by Sheriff Coney for attempting to poison Manager B. D. Baldwin and his family at Makaweli plantation, with a preliminary hearing held today before District Judge Hoffgaard at Waimea.

Andrews Fined for Contempt

Sheriff J A Andrews was fined $50 for contempt of court after he failed to hand over $160.54 from fines and costs to the Clerk. The incident followed an ex parte order directing payment and a judge’s ruling that Andrews acted in contempt by arguing the court's authority. The case continued with a final hearing scheduled for 10 o'clock that morning.
