A blaze at the home of Charles Hilsner Jr. killed two dogs but no people. The fire started about 12 08 am in a first floor bedroom and dining room, likely from a cigarette as Carol Hilsner slept. she was treated for smoke inhalation.
The Township Committee weighs a 14000 architect fee amid 250 million in Public Works funds and a five to one chance of not being awarded Hillside’s request. Mayor Wovsaniker says towns seek reasonable projects while Benoist offers reduced rates and plans for the 1972 Hillside Ave Firehouse may finally be built.
John W. Warner argues the Bicentennial is a turning point for America, driven by individual achievement and community efforts across all states. He praises citizen participation, learning in history, and the can do spirit while urging continued dedication as the nation steps into Century Three.
The Hillside Civil Defense and Disaster Control Police Reserve Unit unveils a new shoulder patch worn by members. Candidates Ed Trainor and Vincent Baldassano, seeking Finance Commissioner, agree to a debate hosted by the Conant Estate Civic Association chaired by Frank Barlow. Seniors at the William Buie Community Center stay busy from 9 am to 3 pm with art classes excursions movies and shuffleboard. The ongoing program begun in February, led by CETA worker Dan Palladino, fosters a lively social life with frequent parties and even budding love affairs.
Members toured Flemington and the State Capitol on an educational trip to Trenton. Plans include a New York day to watch a show being taped and more activities at the Hillside senior center with frequent speakers from local services and classes in arts, health, and nutrition.
Township Committeeman James C. Welsh was chosen to coordinate the election of Republican candidates for the Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders. The slate includes William Ruocco, Robert Morgan, Charles Hardwick, and Edward Weber. Welsh, serving three years on the Township Committee, recently held multiple local legal posts and led Hillside Republican activities.
Seniors and officials discussed funding for the William Bule Community Center Senior Citizens Program. The Union County Office on Aging may provide 75 percent of a $11,700 total, with Hillside townships covering 25 percent.
