141 Start Nursing Program Brings Hillside Freshmen Into Coop Nursing
Miss Mary A. Harbula and Miss Fe Uidia Heir of Hillside are among 141 freshmen in a three year Cooperative Nursing Program linking Union College with Elizabeth General and Muhlenberg Hospitals. The program awards an Associate in Science from Union College and a diploma from the Schools of Nursing, totaling 90 college credits. The nursing students will take 45 nursing credits plus 45 in general education and must pass the New Jersey Board of Nursing licensure exam after graduation. The initiative, explained by Union College President Dr. Kenneth W. Iversen, uses existing local facilities and assigns nursing teaching to the Schools of Nursing faculties while general education is handled by Union College.

Did You Know About Hillside Education Involvement Initiative
Thirty three teachers volunteered thirty free mods last year to run rap sessions with Hillside High School students to boost rapport and involvement. A liaison committee formed in response to concerns from Black parents seeks total involvement of students faculty administration and community to shape a better educational system. Over a year has passed since teachers began negotiating with the Board without a final agreement, yet teachers continued to work. Many High School teachers spend about a quarter of their time patrolling halls and supervising rather than teaching, raising questions about promised “quality time” and innovation.
