Bartender Shot After Refusing Change at Idle Hour Tavern
James J. Hazard 42 of 42 Fairbanks St sustained a gunshot wound when a man demanding change of a quarter shot through a tavern window as Hazard prepared to depart with receipts. Hazard, a part time bartender at Idle Hour Tavern Elizabeth for 18 years and a US Post Office employee, underwent surgery and is listed as recovering. He and his wife Edith have three children. Hazard previously served in the US Army Medical Corps in Europe during World War II and worked 22 years at Diehl Manufacturing before joining the Post Office. The motive remains under investigation.

Hillside Week Fire Crews Contain Boiler Room Fire
Firemen responded to an unexplained smoke cloud in the boiler room at Kaiser unpinurry Wishar Friday due to a faulty valve causing overflow. Police were contacted after a series of thefts and minor accidents including a car strike report at 480 Mander Place and a $180 cash loss at Herbert Chevrolet. A child bit by a puppy was treated and kept under observation 10 days. An Irvington runaway was released to guardians after attempts to coerce local boys for money. Other incidents include stolen bicycle value 55 and watch cash thefts, and a police report of a driver with no registration after a collision on Route 22 Hilldate Place. A dog bite and hospital visit were recorded in Elizabeth cases.

Gas Leak Controlled at The Fieloid Co Inc
Firemen responded at five p.m. last Tuesday to The Fieloid Co Inc at 123 Central Ave after a strong gas smell from a propane tank at Robert 4A Johnston Co at 1269 Central Ave. Gas overflowed through emergency vents. Crews used a two and a half inch flow line through the night to cool the tank and restore the area. Work continued by firemen and the chocolate company's maintenance department for three to four days until vapors were eliminated.
