The Hillside Teachers Association and the Board of Education opened contract talks for 1970 71 to set the first blueprints for the decade. A five member board committee led by President Bierman and superintendent Dr Anthony Avella met with six negotiations team members led by Weiss to discuss association views.

Local Hillside area reports include attempts to enter a parked car on Sunday at 1279 Gurd Ave, thefts of car parts from vehicles on Fairbanks and Crescent avenues, a home entry via a 12 foot ladder, wire theft from a pickup, multiple vehicle and property break ins, damaged screens, and a fire at 8 41 p m on Coe Ave with further blazes on Maple Avenues. Police investigate a theft of a 24 inch bicycle, a 1969 car for 2500, and a ransacking of Mid States Containers. A detective sustained non fatal injuries in a rear end crash. Financial penalties noted for a traffic offense in the Hillside Municipal Court.

Survey To Determine Senior Housing Needs
A questionnaire will be mailed to residents to assess the need for elderly housing. The Senior Citizens Housing Committee, led by Commissioner I., approved the survey at a municipal building meeting last Wednesday. The project would offer low cost housing for seniors with limited income, with site location suggestions near Liberty Ave, Williamson Ave, Ny Broad St, Mayfair Theatre area, and local industrial land.

Hijackers Take $60,000 Scotch Haul From Truck
Anthony Gomes of Newark says he was hijacked for five hours after a red car blocked his westbound route near Hillside Place. A gunman entered the cab, forced him out, and the crew unloaded 960 cases of scotch valued at $60,000 before releasing him in Hempstead. The tractor-trailer was leased to Mark Trucking Corp. by Sea-Land Service Inc. Detective Alfonso Minervino leads the probe.

Scouts and Students Plan Dirty River Clean-Up

Men Injured as Car Hits Poles on Route 22
Two men were injured when a car driven by Karl Leopold, 62, struck two Public Service Electric and Gas poles on Route 22 near Cornell Place. Leopold suffered scalp lacerations requiring seven sutures and a cerebral concussion. Thomas Campbell, 58, sustained forehead lacerations needing 31 sutures, knee abrasions, and a sprained neck. Both men were treated and released from St Elizabeth Hospital.
