Union County Civil Defense to run weekly Police Training School

Hillside to press county for detention basin plan
Special Attorney Monroe Ackerman told the township committee that he will urge the County Board of Freeholders to approve Detention Basin No. 1 to control Elizabeth River flooding. The basin would run from Route 22 to North Union Avenue on Union County Park Commission land donated by Hillside. Estimated cost about 1.6 million dollars, with earlier talks of three basins costing over 5 million. Basin would protect Elizabeth and Union townships and benefit Hillside and County residents by containing flood waters after heavy storms and expanding park use when not needed for floods. Ackerman argued the county has the right to fund necessary improvements with nominal municipal contributions while some Freeholders fear future demands.
