Local Court Citation Honors Judge Birnbaum for Court Service

The township honored Magis que Birnbaum with a citation from the American Bar Association for raising the standards of the court. Judge Birnbaum credited clerks, police officials, and local officials, and dedicated the award to the staff. An ordinance creating a police captain rank was introduced, public hearing set for October 15. An appeal by Miss Marion Earl from a planning board ruling was denied. Other measures included curbs and pavement along Bloy Street and Pulaski Week proclamation.

Entire Group Backs School Suit In Livingston Road Case

The suit to block the use of Livingston road for a high school gym addition is backed by all Millstream Minor Civic Association members. Secretary Robert A Mangold said the effort is funded by neighborhood residents, not three families, and notes Ninth District Civic Association and Liberty Park Community Association oppose the road use.

First Aid Course For Plant Workers

Arrangements have been completed for a standard first aid course to be given by the Hillside Ambulance Squad at no charge to industrial employees working in Hillside. Six Wednesday sessions begin October 16 from 7 30 to 9 30 at the Bristol Myers auditorium on Long avenue. Those who attend and pass will receive a Red Cross standard first aid card.

D'Amiano suit over vacant gas station ends in township favor

A suit by Republican candidate Joseph A. D'Amiano to compel the township to repair a vacant gas station at Maple and Bailey avenues was decided in favor of the township by Superior Court Judge John B. Wick in Elizabeth. The judge ruled taxpayers cannot force officials to enlarge their own ordinances and noted steps had already been taken to correct the condition. D'Amiano said he was pleased with the result though he lost the formal decision, adding neighbors along Batley avenue believe the nuisance was removed by the suit.
