In a letter to the Hillside School Board the Township Committee urges restraint on local tax growth. It notes tax rate rises from 5.30 in 1951 to 5.82 in 1953 and calls for better use of available data while seeking state aid measures to ease property burdens. The mayor offers to confer on the matter.
Township Attorney Adele Braelow was directed to appeal the Union County Board of Taxation ruling that lowered the Overhead Door Company at 630 Ramsey Avenue from 109000 to 99000 after the local Board of Assessors had raised it from 74000 to 109000. Mayor Milton B. Conford urged sustaining the reassessment program.
The Planning Board announces a policy to keep Hillside largely residential, preferring to sacrifice some industrial tax ratables to protect home values. The piece contrasts Westfield as a home community with Linden’s industrial character and notes snow and urban change themes along with a municipal gift of Jamies saltwater taffy to officials.

Louis Nuse of 1440 North Broadstreet announces Nuse Motors Inc has been named Nash dealer and will display 1954 Nash Airflyte models Ambassador Statesman and Rambler. Grand opening this Saturday 4 to 9 p.m. with refreshments and a customer reception.
War Veterans Post Davenport Hill 1722 WFW presented the traveling gavel to Michael A. Kelly Post of Union. A large local post delegation attended. Monday night Hillside War Memorial admitted three new members Richard Bruce Harrison John D De Quine and Gerald Healey. Commander James J Johnson of Plainfield Memorial Post 7474 attended as guest.
Trustees of the Jewish Community Center agreed to purchase the K Blair Ortmann home at Hillside and Mann avenues for 31500, to serve as a recreation center for teenagers and seniors, with pledges and funding from the Jewish Community Council of Essex County. The center plans a March 30 possession and a Friday evening through Sunday closure policy, plus coordination with area schools and local groups. A separate accident at Evergreen Cemetery killed Walter Moran, 55, of Elizabeth, after his car skidded and struck a fence. driver Allen McGovern, 23, was charged with causing death by operation of a car. Moran was a former bartender and owner of Moran's Clam Bar, with surviving relatives listed. Autopsy was performed.
Miss Dorothy Craig of 532 North Broad Street Elizabeth joins Hillside National Bank as teller after banking courses in Elizabeth and Newark. She previously worked for Elizabeth Daily Journal Cities Federal Savings and Loan Jersey Mortgage Central Home Trust and Berkeley Savings Newark. New staff also includes three local part time teens Louise Dandres Clyde Tapper and William Waterston from Elizabeth and Hillside.
Township Committee awarded 862697 for a new municipal complex with library firehouse and maintenance garage. Frank Briscoe Co will do general work and other firms handle structural steel electrical heating plumbing elevators and rail equipment. Three new firemen were approved after Civil Service exams and start salaries are 3200 annually.
The Planning Board hires Community Planning Associates to prepare an investigative survey and a comprehensive five point zoning study covering land use, population density, street patterns, lot sizes, and a new zoning ordinance with a detailed map. The firm will attend up to seven meetings with optional extra meetings at fifty dollars each and will deliver text, tracings, and maps upon completion.
Eleven year old lyric soprano Marcia Joyce Botnick daughter of Mr and Mrs Harvey M Botnick of 1611 Summit avenue Newark will present a recital at Lauter Piano Company auditorium Newark on Saturday evening November 28 at 8 15 o clock. She will sing Latin German Italian and English pieces including an aria from Mozart s The Marriage of Figaro. Botnick has appeared on WSOU FM WNJR radio and as concert soloist for the Composers Guild at Carl Fischers Hall New York City. She studied with Ann C Benedict Newark and attends George Washington School and has supported charity performances for The Home For The Aged The Little Sisters of the Poor Hadassah and the Hospital for Crippled Children Newark.
