Turkey Day gridiron clash pits Weequahic vs Hillside

The 28th meeting of Weequahic and Hillside High School football happens on Thanksgiving Day at 11 a.m. at Untermann Field Newark. The Turkey Day game draws a large crowd despite mixed records, with Hillside leading the series 18-4-5 since 1933 while both teams have won one of the four games since 1957.

Couple Wed Fifty Years At 50th Anniversary Dinner

Birnbaum Named Hillside Mayor-Elect for 1962

The Hillside township committee revealed Sidney Birnbaum will become mayor on January 1, 1962. John A. Deach will be Police Commissioner, Charles S. Mancuso Fire Commissioner, Max Schleifer Finance Commissioner, and Monroe Ackerman Public Affairs Commissioner. Birnbaum, a former magistrate and attorney, earned the American Bar Association award for municipal court conduct and served in World War II, earning a Purple Heart and Silver Star. Lt Col Karl Ross Sent To France With 108th Air Base Group

Lt Col Karl B Ross of 200 North Avenue, recalled to service for the fourth time, sails for France with the 108th Air Base Group. A former Irvington High School instructor, he served five years in World War II, then spent 21 months in Korea as an air intelligence officer. He was recalled in 1957 for a year and graduated from the Air Force Command and Staff College. He leaves behind his wife and a 12 year old daughter and comments on returning to active duty.
