A diabetes detection campaign will run the week of November 17 23 by the Board of Health with the State Department of Health. Dr Gerson L Ram health officer urges use of the dreypak test noting confidentiality. Early diagnosis enables proper medical care and a normal life for diabetics.
Mayor W. William Di Buono and Committeeman Max Schlei fer thanked supporters after Tuesday's election. They reaffirm their pledge to conduct community affairs to the best of their ability and in the best interests of all residents.
The Hillside Woman's Club welfare department schedules an all day work meeting at chairman Mrs. Charles Smith's home 269 Ryan Street on Tuesday November 12 at 10 30 a m. Members prepare Christmas favors for Greystone Hospital and are asked to bring a sandwich. Desserts and coffee will be served by hostesses Mrs. Arthur G Kirk Mrs Kenneth Bauer and Mrs Addison Sanborn.
The Mothers Club of Oratory School of Summit hosts its 19th annual Fall luncheon fashion show and card party on Wednesday November 13 at Hotel Suburban East Orange. Hillside residents Mrs Clifford O'Neill and committee members Mrs William Shuhala Mrs Gustave Suckow participate as models and organizers. Proceeds fund the school’s new $850000 building under construction this month.

A polling-place switch for the first district prompted new signage and a policewoman directing voters to the North Broad Street location.
Nicholas Beale of 1000 Salem Avenue received the Elinor S. Higgins Award of $25 for his watercolor Brittany Coast at the 26th annual New Jersey State Exhibition hosted by the Montclair Art Museum. Hillside artists Blanche Bright and Mrs Lillian Moress also have works on display with Reflections Still Life and The Tarot Reader among them.
An executive Saybrook School P.T.A. meeting at 840 Winchester Ave outlined plans for Back to School Night on November 13 at A. P. Morris School to honor American Education Week. Visitation starts 7 45 p.m. with the business meeting at 8 45 p.m.
Hillside Avenue School PTA unit announces a trip to the United Nations, set for Thursday December 5. Reservations are now open as organizers report progress from board meeting with international relations chairmen Mrs. Leo Lowenstein and Mrs. Abe Berger.
Three Hillside High School members will perform at the 29th annual New Jersey All-State High School Chorus and Orchestra, Sunday November 17 at 3 pm in the Mosque Theatre Newark. Gail Jaffe James Winston and Marcia Botnick are named from Hillside.
Bennett Pringle, chairman of Hillside participation in the Community Chest drive in Eastern Union County, urged volunteers to complete tasks quickly. The $540,000 drive is in its cleanup stage with division chairmen meeting for three Wednesdays at the Elizabeth Carteret Hotel to report progress. Everett H. Davey, general chairman, thanked all workers for aiding 25 health and welfare agencies serving Elizabeth, Hillside, Linden, Roselle, and Roselle Park.
Frederick Crossman, 51, of East Orange, was charged with offering a fraudulent check for 1850 dollars to buy a car from Chrys ler dealer. He posted 1000 dollars bail and surrendered at police headquarters for a Municipal Court hearing. The complaint was filed by Harold Reiss of Gorman P. Fischer Inc.
A Red Cross baby care course begins Tuesday November 12 at the chapter house 644 Salem Avenue Elizabeth. Six lessons run Tuesdays and Thursdays at 1 pm through the course.
Due to higher costs of material and labor the stand price of The Hillside Times will rise to 10 cents starting with next week’s issue. The change is needed to continue delivering complete news and an increasing number of pictures.
James S. Pickering, assistant astronomer of Hayden Planetarium, outlined six planned satellites with diverse instruments at a Hillside Rotary Club talk. He described the first Russian satellite as a scientific achievement and detailed a magnesium sphere satellite 20% inches in diameter, 21 pounds, plus a 72 foot rocket with 27 000 pound thrust.
Hillside voters propelled Mayor W. William Di Buono and Commissioner Max Schleifer to re election with margins around two thousand and fifteen hundred respectively. Meyner won statewide while Hillside helped shift the 15th district and backed residence voting reforms. Conservative slate also tallied modest results.
Mrs. Dorothy Strunk of 1288 Oakwood avenue said she was grabbed from behind near Robert street while walking home after a bus stop around 12 30 am. The stocky assailant punched her, took a pipe from her bag and fled with a companion driving a nearby car. Her injuries were minor.
Hillside Industrial Foundation presented a check for 1000 to the Hillside Community Orchestra. Harry A. Cooper foundation president delivered the gift to William Krautblatt at Cooper Alloy Corp. office. The gift supports operating expenses and sustaining the orchestra.
The Franklineers will lead a regular monthly service at Franklin Memorial Methodist Church New ark on Sunday November 10 at 7 pm. Guest speaker Lalomile Karu of Western Samaea holds a two year Crusade Scholarship at Drew University and is in his second year. A family night supper is planned for Friday November 15 at 6 pm with Rev Roger Floyd presenting a World Missions program including Japanese games for children. The Commission on Missions oversees the program with Rev Fred B Morris Mrs Burton Blavier Mrs Charles Blazier William G Hock and Mrs Edward Samaha on the committee.
The first Calvin Coolidge School parent education meeting was held Tuesday in the school sewing room. Mrs. Fred Lehrelhofer led the event with nurse Kathryn Redling speaking on Better Health for Better Grades. Miss Ethel Deber’s second grade class achieved 100 percent PTA membership in the current drive.
The Ladies Auxiliary of Charles Wernicke Jr Chapter 55 D A V met to finalize a hospital party on November 18 in Ward 568 at Lyons Veterans Hospital with Mrs Olga Maul in charge and Mrs Anna Babcock coordinating VAVS arrangements. A bingo party with entertainment and refreshments is planned.
