Police and Firemen Get Pay Increases for College
Township committee adopts an ordinance to grant police and fire personnel salary increases of 250 after 33 college credits and 500 after 66 credits for approved study in police or fire science. Rutgers offers a 66 credit police science program. Additional allocations include 17000 for Norman L. Sanford playground improvements, 115000 for four street resurfacing projects, 19590 for the township share of a joint sewer system land acquisition, and changes to Route 10 bus stops plus new parking restrictions on Long Ave.

Hillside Memorial Day Parade Promises Wide Turnout
The third annual Memorial Day parade in Hillside will start Friday at 12 30 p m at Hillside High School, routing along Liberty Avenue Oakland Terrace Maple Avenue Hillside Avenue to the Police Athletic Building. More than sixty organizations including seven bands and three military units will march under Parade Chairman Paul Szymanski with dignitaries reviewing from Kennedy Plaza. An appeal urged residents to decorate homes, five thousand flags will be handed to children and marchers, and refreshments provided at the Hillside PAL Building after the parade. In case of rain the event shifts to Sunday June 1 at 1 00 p m.

Slain Youth's Mother Dies in New Jersey Tragedy
Agnes Brennan aged 55 of Union died of a heart attack after the death of her son Kevin A Brennan 23 who was shot and killed in Union New Jersey May 17. Authorities probe the shooting by Middlesex County detectives investigating Brennan who refused to stop a car he drove toward his parents home and showed a pistol which turned out to be a starter pistol for athletics.

Health Board Joins Pollution Control Commission
The health board votes to join the Suburban Essex Air Pollution Control Commission with Blomfield East Orange Irvington Livingston Maplewood Orange South Orange Veron and Union. The township will qualify for a federal matching fund program to curb air pollution. Health Officer Charles Dotto says the board contributes 1200 dollars, matched three to one by the federal gov ernment.

Reserve Police Motorized With Own Training Vehicle
Hillside Mayor Alex Menza presented a training vehicle to Hillside Civil Defense Disaster Control Director Jack Berrel for use by the Hillside Reserve Police. The unit, under Police Chief Ernest Voelk, trains at the police athletic building and will expand to motorized patrol. Five new officers graduate June 10 from the Union County CD- DC Basic Reserve Police School in Westfield. Officers include Thomas Brennan, Carmine Depuma, Louis Federico, David Herskovitz, and Michael Opsasnick. Captain George Helock directs the Reserve Police.
