Elks Parade Entry for 80th Jubilee and Flag Day Service

Hillside Lodge 1591 Elks to join Township 50th anniversary parade with a float and marchers on Decoration Day. It will also hold a public Flag Day Service on Sunday June 9 at 4 p.m. and a Little League field day on Saturday June 8. The lodge aids crippled children and veterans in hospitals.

LOCAL OFFICIALS believe Route 78 through the center would ruin the community as the Newark Airport expansion threatens life and property with noise and hazards. Elizabeth officials back expansion while Gov. Hughes pledges precautions. Residents may form Jersey Jetport Site–style groups to pressure for action. Mayor Addonizio calls the Port Authority a super government amid long-standing lease talks and bond payments.

John Cavicchia of National State Bank Hillside Office announced that deposits slips for all business accounts from Hillside National Bank are being mailed. New checks with account numbers and business names will follow as accounts will be processed by the Linden data computer center starting June 15.

Wellesley Grad Plans Law School Admission

Fieldhouse Contracts Awarded for Woodfield Stadium

The Board of Education awarded contracts totaling 21 771 for a new Woodfield Stadium fieldhouse on Conant Street. Edgar Hill Contractors won general construction for 16758. Breen Iron Works 585. Max L. Huckman 347. John P. Mikos 960. An appropriation of 25 000 was approved.

Sidewalk Art Show Anniversary at Hillside High School

The Woman's Club of Hillside sponsors a 50th anniversary Sidewalk Art Show titled Our Lawn. Adults in Hillside may enter up to three paintings displayed along the fence at Hillside High School from 1 to 4 PM on Saturday June 11, with a rain date of June 18. Children will also exhibit art with class entries and awards for all displayed works.

High Migratory Rate of College Students

Mercer Newark State College assistant director of admissions reports New Jersey has among the nation's highest student migratory rates with 57 percent leaving the state for education He traces historical steps from colonial colleges to state teachers colleges and notes 6000 teachers left the field by 1962 while six state colleges produced only 2014 graduates and 50 of need from liberal arts colleges He details Newark State admissions aims 2023 applicants and ten study areas while noting male teachers stay longer in the field and 68 percent of female teachers leave within two years Eighty six percent of women remain in teaching over time plus other local club notes on a barbershop harmony project a golf event and a new dairy co member.

Former Engineer Clifton H. Luster dies at 67

Funeral services were held for Clifton H. Luster former township engineer at Growney Funeral Home Elizabeth. He died suddenly at home aged 67 born in Elizabeth Rutgers alumnus 1917 served as a WWI Air Force officer. Survived by wife Gertrude Williams Luster daughter Sally L. Lewis and six grandchildren.

Hess Urges Aid For PAL Fund Campaign

Louis J. Hess, Hillside PAL committee chair, reports about $600 raised in week one. He notes all service clubs joined to form the committee and aims to raise funds to avoid extra drives this year. Since inception five years ago, Hillside PAL has provided recreation for thousands of students. If every resident family contributed, the fund would exceed $6,000. $5,000 is needed for annual operation.

Trail Blazers to Make Canada Trips this Summer

A group of eighteen Union County boys plus a Trail Blazers director will travel through Canadian forests on a four week danoeing fishing trip during July and August. Camp Wawayanda hosts the resident YMCA program with openings for two four week sessions. George Hoffman announced remaining slots and urged interested youths to call for information and registration.
