Woman elected first female president of Union County school boards
Mildred Cahn Hess, longtime PTA and community volunteer from Hillside, was chosen as the first woman president of the Union County School Boards Association. A former Newark native and champion fencer, bowler, and athlete, she has balanced family life with extensive PTA, recreation, and school board service while advancing work study, remedial reading, and new mathematics programs.

Singer Estelle Susser Dies at 35 in Irvington
Estelle Susser, 31 Yale Ave Irvington, died May 14 at age 35. A former professional singer and member of AFTRA SAG and Deborah group, she co ran Music Unlimited with her composer-conductor husband in Newark. Survived by husband, daughter Judy, brother Joseph Feldman, and sisters Doris Goldberg and Jane Barris. Rabbi Leon J. Yagod led services.
