Mutual Aid Across Fire Lines In Hillside Assistance
Last Monday night and Tuesday morning a Hillside pumper moved to Union to standby at a store fire and a Newark pumper from Weequahic moved to Hillside to standby. In historic times engines would stop at township lines, but today mutual aid agreements trigger automatic cross community responses. Hillside received aid from Union and Newark for lumberyard and Airex fires, with Irvington also assisting in past years.

Hillside Educators Lead The Way
Hillside Public School officials have led a statewide effort to oppose changing work titles for fire detection installers and electricians, arguing higher wages would raise mandatory fire system costs for schools. The move could affect over half of New Jersey's public districts, with $20,000 redirected to education. Dr. Wayne T. Branom plans a Washington trip for 55 educators to press Congress for federal school aid.

Appeal on Apts Following defeat on 94-unit garden project
Arden Homes Inc. contemplates appealing Superior Court Judge Milton A. Feller’s ruling denying a variance for a 94-unit garden apartment at North Broad and King Streets. A decision in about ten days will decide if the case goes to the Appellate Division. The judge upheld the township committee’s denial, though the zoning board favored the variance. The Hillside area zoning mainly restricts to one family, Elizabeth land to apartments, on a 100000 square foot tract with most frontage on Elizabeth’s south side. The judge said zoning decisions rest with local legislators and that plaintiffs failed to show special reasons for the variance. Continued on Page 8.
