Starting this May seniors at Hillside High School may leave after 2 p.m. if their study or unscheduled classes remain and with parental consent. The program, studied with student government, administrators, and peer schools, aims to benefit students and the community and required permission slips.
Cub Pack 99 and escorts visited Ringling Bros. Circus in New York City on May 8. Other items note high school play reschedule tickets, Hillside Creative Arts plans, Christ the King Parish Fair May 12 16, and local police reports including vehicle damage and thefts.
The High School Steering Committee met on April 29 to discuss an open campus policy and design a questionnaire to poll the community. Three options were proposed Open Campus Open Lunch and Open Ended Day with staggered dismissals starting 12 30 p m to 2 p m seniors already using the plan as of May 5 1971. Further community meetings are planned May 13 27 and June 10 with open access to all citizens.
Two second grade classes in Saybrook embrace new reading programs. Miss Geraldine Heatherman uses SRA Reading Laboratory to tailor independent reading progress while Miss Bonnie Segall pilots Open Court Reading, linking reading with handwriting spelling and writing to build language skills and appreciation for literature.
Karoline Isherwood earned a Bachelor of Arts in elementary education from the University of Kentucky on Saturday May 8. She resides at 352 Sanford Avenue and is a member of Gamma Beta Phi leadership honorary and Kappa Delta, the highest education honorary. She has repeatedly made the Dean's List.
Hillside officials led by Mayor Marvin Corwick declared a war on brokers accused of blockbusting in Hillside Union and Irvington areas. The township will urge citizens to report via the township committee with cases forwarded to the New Jersey Real Estate Commission. Penalties under a 1969 ordinance include fines up to 200 dollars and up to 30 days in jail for blockbusting.
The American Cancer Society extends the Cancer Crusade to end of May asking teenagers students and parents to volunteer Saturday morning May 22 in Hillside with transportation lunch and a warm feeling from aiding the fight. Call 351 6832 after 5 PM to volunteer.
The Hillside Industrial Foundation and Hillside Industrial Association urge members to donate to the Hillside Ambulance Squad. A $50 gift earns a permanent plaque inscription at the squad building on Leslie Street. Send donations to Harold Benzing, vice president at National State Bank, 1820 N Broad St, Hillside.
The Hillside Community Center hosts two yo-yo contests on Friday May 28 with separate starts for elementary school at 4 p.m. and high school at 8 p.m. Skills include walk the dog and loop the loop with final round judged on loop the loop repetitions.
Mrs. Claire Pepe of Nutley filed a lawsuit against Hillside Township, Fireman Ludwig Lew and Henry Katchen over a collision at Salem and Hollywood Avenues. She alleges injuries including head, face, chest, spine and back after a crash involving an aerial ladder truck responding to a fire.
Hillside residents attended a diabetes testing program held May 5 at the Community Center. The Board of Health sponsored by the Jaycees and aided by Dr. Peyser, Dr. Lilien, Dr. Barne and student volunteers celebrated a high turnout and noted 44 previously unaware individuals received follow up testing to aid their physicians in treatment decisions.
