Charity Benefit At Santana Attracts Kennedy Patronage
Mrs. Thomas J. Mahan chaired a benefit for Morning Star School for crippled children in Santana, Fla. She secured Mrs. Joseph F. Kennedy, mother of President John F. Kennedy, as a patroness and introduced her at the event. The affair was hailed as a prestige boost for the host. Hillside’s Fun Fair Bowl, managed by Jack Best with Albert Dankoff, says undesirables were weeded out and the venue now rivals top bowls in Union and Essex counties. The bowling alley and recreation center is kept to high standards and will not be tolerated if it falls short.

Police Commissioner Sidney Birnbaum reported Hillside participated in Operation Alert 1961 held April 28 and 29 to bolster home readiness. The drill involved a CONELoad warning, simulated bomb bursts across New Jersey and Pennsylvania, and required evaluation of attack data, radiological effects, damage and manpower with constant radio contact to the Union County Control Center.

Winners Named in VFW Essay Contest at Davenport
The Davenport Dill Jr. Post 1722 VFW Ladies Auxiliary awarded prizes for the high school essay contest "Law and the Free Citizen." Barbara Woller won first prize 15 dollars, Julian E. Lange took second 10 dollars, and Diana Irenas third 5 dollars. Judges included Mayor Louis Disehler Police Chief Ernest Voelk and Hillside Avenue School principal Dr Walter Krumblegel. The winning essay will advance to the Department of New Jersey contest at the June convention.
