The Calvin Coolidge PTA executive board met with president Mrs Gerald Brickman to announce the pre school program is underway. First session with teacher Mrs Frank Korzenesky was March 7 and sessions continue each Tuesday. A nominating committee led by Mrs Harold Fischer will select officers for 1972 1973. A Hobby Night is planned for April 20 with a cake sale. A plaque for Ann Ty Goldberg and donated books will be placed in the library. Plans for a May 13 bazaar were finalized with booths prizes and refreshments.
Memorial General Hospital received a portable surgical microscope donated by the Union Township Lions Club. Drs Marvil G. Frank and Francis T. Christoph credit the device with expanding and improving ophthalmology services, aiding cataract and cornea procedures, and enabling bedside examination with high magnification.
Turtle Back Zoo in West Orange will open for the season on Friday March 24 with new exhibits including five penguins, a bat cave, a tapir pool and four baby otters. The zoo houses over 750 animals of 250 species and features a refined miniature train, updated paths, and a rebuilt Eating House. Admission is 1 for adults and 28 cents for children under 16. hours are 10 am to 5 pm weekdays and 11 am to 6 pm Sundays and holidays.
Two short films on Plant Quarantine by the U S Department of Agriculture will screen at Trailside on March 26 at 2:00 pm. Donald W Mayer, Trailside director, will lecture on The Changing Seasons at the Planetarium with multiple showings from March 26 to March 29. Tickets are limited and first come, first served. Children under eight are not admitted.
Reading contest for grades three through eight at A P Morris School Library enters its second year. Students aim to read many books and place entries in grade plastic bags. The top class earns ice cream. third grade hopes to repeat last year’s victory.
The American Cancer Society launches its annual Crusade in Union County on April 1 with 7,000 volunteers. Local chairmen organize leaflets, fund raising to $190,000, and services for patients including counseling, equipment loan, free gowns, transport, and home care. John G. Kulish chairs Hillside effort.
Five Hillside residents have been named to the Dean's List for the Fall 1971 term at Stevens Institute of Technology. They are Bruce Schuckman, Anthony Caljendrello, Vito Jokubaitis, Richard Lobel, and Michael J. Engel, with listed street addresses.
