Defense Drill Highlights Need For More Practice
About 100 Hillside Civilian Defense volunteers from six units took part in a drill Friday night lasting 7 30 to 9 30 pm. A general air raid alert from 7 30 to 7 40 pm and simulated bombing of the North Avenue pumping station were featured. Incidents included an airplane crash at 1600 Maple Avenue and fires at the Bristol-Myers plant on Long Avenue and at Bloy Street. Detective William Dieroff and Mrs Elizabeth McCraith led the control center. Boy Scouts acted as messengers. Officials said the alert was only 50 percent effective in halting traffic, citing traffic from Elizabeth Union Turnpike Newark and Route 22. Firemen and police mostly reached scenes within three minutes. The ambulance arrived within three minutes. all squads reached incidents within ten minutes. Sgt Lawrence Treger at Police Headquarters faced over 200 calls, many noting they had not heard the alert despite newspaper notices. The group agreed additional drills are needed.

Town approves slight changes in employee pay scale
A new ordinance introduced by the Township Committee on Tuesday sets this year’s employee salaries for public hearing on April 7. Subordinate Civil Service positions moved to a resolution, with chief salaries at 5800 for Police and Fire, 4450 for Tax Collector, 4300 for Treasurer, and 2200 for Welfare Director.
