An 8 1/2 year old Denver boy Peter Rozano with intractable asthma begins a month long stay at the Children’s Asthma Research Institute and Hospital. He undergoes extensive testing under Dr Samuel C Bukantz to determine allergy triggers and treatment plan while living in a modern cottage with other afflicted children and receiving schooling and recreation. Local groups funded his travel and Hillside residents pray for his rehabilitation within two years at the haven of hope.
Hillside Kiwanis Club members attended a mock trial at Townleys Restaurant Union presided by Magistrate V William DiBuono. Henry Goldher directed the session with members including William Gural Robert Diamond Monroe Ackerman Albert Par sonnet Dan Menza and others. The group unanimously decided the show will not go on the road.
Harry G. Miller, 231 Bradford Rd, Republican candidate for Hillside Township Committee, warns residents against plans to permit high rise apartments. He argues current law blocks such housing, but zoning revisions could push it through with sewer costs born by taxpayers. He urges public objection to protect Hillside’s suburban character and warns about infrastructure and budget strains.
The American Red Cross announces spring courses in Home Care for the Sick and Injured. Classes run Tue Thu 1 3 pm from March 13 to April at the Elizabeth Chapter House 203 W Jersey St. An evening session starts March 14 meeting once a week Wednesdays 7 30 to 9 30 pm for 7 weeks. 10 to 16 students weekly. Automatic courses in Mother and Baby Care start the first August. Registration by phone or letter to the Chapter house.
January tax collections totaled 635886 dollars and 58 cents as reported this week by Collector John C. Pozar. The release credits the Revenue Office for the payment period and notes improved intake over prior months.
Attorney Henry Goldhor is recommended to succeed Robert Kirkpatrick on the Union County Board of Elections. The governor will appoint him on the Democratic Party’s and county officials’ recommendation. Goldhor has held multiple local posts in Hillside and Union County and is a longtime attorney. He resides at 180 West King Street.
Rabbi Dr. Immanuel Jacobovits will lecture on Medicine in Jewish Law focusing on euthanasia abortion and autopsies. The talk is Tuesday March 6 at 8 30 p m in Holtz Auditorium Sinai Hebrew School Maple Ave and Clark St under Tri County Council sponsorship with Sisterhoods and will include Q A. He is chief rabbi of Ireland and author of Jewish Medical Ethics published 1959.
Hillside Democratic Club selects Special Attorney Robert Diamond as running mate for Commissioner John A Desch two days after mayoral re election decision. Diamond, a Newark attorney and local leader, cited for prior township service and community roles. Also noted is Collector John G Pozar as a ticket member.
Dr Wayne Branom the superintendent calls an 8th grade parents meeting at 8 15 p m in Hillside High School auditorium on Monday March 5 1962 to discuss the high school curriculum guidance program and ninth grade scheduling for 1962 63. Principal Ruhl Custer will present the curriculum and registration details and Edward Director of Guidance will explain the guidance functions. Attendance is urged for informed parent involvement in selecting the coming year’s courses.
Henry Groh of Hillside National Bank was reelected president of the Honorary PBA Local 70 at a quarterly meeting at College Inn. New officers include Samuel H. Gooen as vice president and Samuel Fazzone as recording secretary. A May 7 Mayfair Theater motion picture benefit and a May 9 joint dinner with the PBA were announced along with a “Washington At Work” screening.
The B nai B rith Young Adults unit announces a skating party on March 4 at 7 30 p m at the South Orange Arena on Northfield Ave open to members and friends.
